Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap. ~ 1 Timothy 3: 1-7

Phil Hodgson, Elder

He was born and raised in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, the fifth of eleven siblings. After high school, he and his brother worked on the family farm for three years. He later met the love of his life, Gloria, and they were married 18 months later. Together, they were blessed with three sons.
Phil began his career at the University of Wisconsin–Madison as a window washer before transferring to the UW Soils Testing Lab. After taking several chemistry and soil science courses at UW, he continued working there for 35 years, eventually retiring as a laboratory supervisor.
Phil grew up attending St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mazomanie. After marrying Gloria, they joined Vermont Lutheran Church. In 1972, Phil and Gloria and their three sons moved to Palmer, Alaska, where Phil planned to work as a soil analyst at a research station. After six weeks, however, they decided Alaska’s long summer daylight hours—and the prospect of very short winter days—weren’t for them. They returned to Wisconsin and purchased their farmette in Wyocena
The family later became members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rio and, several years afterward, joined Christ Congregational Church. Following the church split, Phil helped form Faith Bible Church, where he has been a happy member ever since.
